Hollyhock (Alcea rosea)

Hollyhocks are classic cottage garden plants known for their tall, stately spires of large, showy blooms. Their flowers appear in a wide range of colors including pink, red, white, yellow, and burgundy, often with a charming old-fashioned, ruffled appearance. Blooming from bottom to top along tall stalks, they make a dramatic vertical statement in borders and against fences or walls. Hollyhocks are technically biennials (flowering in their second year), though many reseed freely and can act like short-lived perennials. They are pollinator magnets and a favorite of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
